China's Premier Wen Jiabao is this week's illusytration in linocut. This time i experimented with more colours. Experience gained: it helps not to cut the linos (as i did) in smaller sizes, if their surfaces are equal they'll guide you when applying the next colour. Trial and terror: I couldn't make a bigger mistake... the photos taken are actually mirrored (in an attempt to fool you), since i forgot to mirror the image before tracing it on linoleum... : ( ...all the linocuts are not mirrored -aka are all wrong- and the final Athens Plus image used is actually the finished work scaned and mirrored to fit print... stupid enough?!
Read about it here (Nick Malkoutzi's blog), and here (AthensPlus).
Did you know the story behind the White Tower at Thessaloniki?... thing is, they took a prisoner and made him paint the tower white... yup, Papandreou's White Tower just for you (and this Friday's Athens Plus).
Oh! and a second version of it for page 2 as always...
Read all about it, here (Athens Plus), and here, (Nick Malkoutzis Blog).
I'm calling this unsuccessful one "3a" since there will be a 3b Ahmedinejad, whom i hope come out better... I tried halftoning some facial space to get a 50% kinda gray with black and white lines, but it didn't come out as planned making Ahmedineja unrocognizable. I'm still uploading it cause i love the way the hair turnned out, it reminds me a lot of Karagkiozis traditional leather carvings.
I should also add that t'was made on grey Linoleum who's hardness is something between the cyan and the brown one. Since this is the one i can surely find both in quantity and variety of mesures, this will be the norm... i'd better get use to it : )
Did i mention that i wanted this with an Erdoghan for Athens Plus?
Katerina came by and helped me print Maktoum... and here he is. Also took me to by some more (pre-ordered) linoleum which has yet to come to the store... for which i'll have to wait untill the end of the week... Monday gotta go to more central stores hoping to find some, i'd hate to let the week pass doing nothing.
Experienxe gained: This time i worked with deluded ink, hafta found out how much more it needs to be deluted since ink is still too thick...
Not a very good picture (you should see the others...) but a very clean linocut of Prince Maktoum (for being the second one to experiment on). Can't wait to print it... tonight or tomorrow maybe. Experience gained: Brown linoleum is much more easy to carve than the cyan one, and the japanese plastic carving tools are way much better than the german wooden ones i got from Praktiker
